Wow! My father in law never talks about the war. Now his grandkids can appreciate what a role he played and what a hero he, and all of these men are. Amazing stuff, wonderful legacy to share and pass on. And he was SO YOUNG at the time makes it even more remarkable. Hats off to you! By the way, I proudly boast that my father in law is Edward (ted) Gates.
Great website. Very interesting for me who is living in the area (Innsbruck).
My father was a T/Sgt radio-gunner with the 489th Squadron of the 340th Group, and was shot down on May 25, 1944 over Italy. He was captured by the fascists, and somehow managed to escape and get back to safety after nearly a month. The sacrifices made by these men made the world what it is today. Thanks
Great site. How about hosting this site absolutely FREE for 3-months at Addr.com? Please feel free to email me for more details. Regards, Nick Richard www.addr.com
I was ground crew electrician with 417, from Foggia to the end of Italian C ampaign. Down the street from me in Sidney BC is Bill Symes who was an instrument basher at the same time. I have written a detailed account with pictures of the 417 squadron days in Italy for my grandchildren, would you be interested. Also is there a 417 sqd association, Bill seemed to think he was a member of one some time back. I was at Cold Lake in 1984 for the colour parade and closing down of the squadron along with other groundcrew members, all of whom have since died. Ian Waterlow RCAF R120249

Any one recall my father Norbert Lenz. He was a radio operator on the 25 and became a ground engineer the rest of the war. Possible in Foggia. Thanks
Hi I'm trying to find out my famly tree. I'm 26 and my mother is Marla Elder Koplitz And my father is Daniel R. Koplitz. If any one has a full famly tree or any input please reach me at 2021c@ureach.com
Thank you. I heard about your site from my brother. My dad, Bernard Tatelman, died in 1964. I still remember him telling stories about WWII.
I am a citizen of Cupello, a country of the region Abruzzo in central Italy. During the second world war, November 3 rd 1943, my country was bombed from allied airplanes and particularly from the 340th bombardment group, 489th bombs squadron. One of the photos of the bombardment are present in this site internet. As I am making a historical search on the facts happened in 1943 I ask to whoever can give I help me documents, news, testimonies, filmed, photos etc. If some veteran of 340th exists, some pilot, someone whom has participated to the missions on Cupello I would like to invite him/it to a historical rievocazione and to furnish me a testimony of the happened facts. Thanks from ing. Luigi Sammartino
I enjoyed looking around your web site. It is very well done. Visit Oz Magic and leave a link in our guestbook if you like. Child friendly site with some educational value. Great sections on Crocodiles, Sharks and Humpback Whales.
Love the nose art! I'll be going through my dad's pics for more if you like.

I'm the younger brother of a pilot in the 428th bomb sqdrn - he flew 68 mission from august 1944 to april 1945 - many in the Brenner Pass. I/m writing his story for my family - he was killed in a crash on 6/9 practicing to fly home - I appreciate your article of the flak there - it gives a better ubderstanding of what he faced.
My grandfather (Charles S. Stout) was a navigator in missions primarily in Italy and Africa. I went to two reunions with he and my grandmother (Darlene Stout) in St. Louis and San Diego. Love the history of the 57th. I would love to see if anyone has pictures or anything they could provide if they knew Chuck. Thanks
Great site, but I wish I had found it before my Father passed away last year. He claimed to have been assigned (enlisted man)to 488th BS from Feb - Jun 43 in North Africa, but never received the European-North Africa campaign medal. His personnel records were among those destroyed in the St. Louis repository fire of '73. In trying to substantiate his claim, I've researched the 340th BG and 448th BS archives at Bolling AFB, in addition to the National Archives without success. Anyone there have any ideas where else I might look?

My father was TSgt Bernie Greenbaum, Old Ironsides I, II and III. He flew mostly with Capt. Ross Hagerman. I've got many pictures of nose art and some other interesting photos, including the aftermath of the bombing of Corsica by the Germans. I will be putting those up on my website at some point. I also have his diary which I am transcribing and will one day publish. Nice site, thanks. Craig

I'm looking for historical or personal information regarding my grandfather, Archibald Phillip Samuels III who served as a bombardier in the 340th Group, 487th squadron. Please direct me to any interesting information regarding him or his unit. Thanks....Chris Samuels
My Step-grandfather was a waist gunner on a B-25 over Italy,(1943-44?), but I don't really know much more than that. Although, I think he was a T/Sgt. His name was John Cullen. If anyone remembers him, and can tell me how I can get some pics of the nose art of the plane he was on, that'd be great. I'm making a 1/48th scale model in his memory. He past on back in '86. If there is anyone with ideas of how to search for further info, I'd be up to it. Thanks, David
